There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the new national Common Core Standards. The debates are occurring in the political arena, at local school districts and in the classroom. As an educator I have my own opinions about the Common Core standards and the “new math” being taught, but most states have adopted them so as parents we must figure out how to help our children trudge along in understanding what they are being taught in the classroom. Even with higher education and a degree, I don't understand everything about this new way of doing math and it appears I am not alone.
